<br />This is to acknowledge receipt of check aggre-
<br />gating the sum of ;650,000., which amount we understand is
<br />to be held and turned over in the absence of contrary in-
<br />structions on September 1, 1942, to our Cou,,on Paying
<br />Department.
<br />During the period when the funds are held in our
<br />Trust Department as Depositary as distinguished from Pay-
<br />ing Agent, we will keep the same secured by a deposit in
<br />our Trust Department of United State: Government Bonds
<br />belonging to the Bank of a value equal to or greater than
<br />the cash deposit.

<br />AN ORDINANCE AUIENDING AND REENACTING SECTIONS 441,44 -', 44.J,
<br />AND REPEALING SECTION 445 OF THE CITY CODE OF 1932 AS HERETOFORE
<br />AMENDED, AND PERT1%.INING TO THE FIRE DEPARTMENT LND FIRE COMPANY.
<br />BE IT ORDAINED by the Council of the City of Charlottesville that Section 445,
<br />entitled Foreman of the Fire House, His Duties, Etc., of the City Code of 1932, as
<br />heretofore amended, be Ind the same is hereby repealed, and that Section 441,
<br />entitled Fire Department, Control and Supervision; Section 442 entitled Fire
<br />Company; and Section 443, entitled Chief, His Duties and Powers, be amended and
<br />reenacted so as to read as follows:
<br />SEC. 441. Fire Department - Fire Company.
<br />The Fire Department of the City shall be composed of a volunteer organiza-
<br />tion known as the "Charlottesville Fire Companyll, and such persons as may be
<br />employed for the Department. Such department so organized shall be under the
<br />direction and control of an officer to be styled chief of the Fire Dej rtment
<br />and one assistant chief, who shall be subject to the control and direction of
<br />the Mayor and City T:11.nager.
<br />SEC. 442. Elections.
<br />Such officers, including the assistant chief, as said company may deem
<br />necessary, shall be elected by the Company at its regul�_r meeting in August
<br />of each year, or as soon thereafter as practicable, and their term of office
<br />shall commence on the first day of September next following. The names of
<br />the officers thus chosen by said Company shall be presented to the Council
<br />at its next regular meeting for confirmation. In case the Council refuses to
<br />confirm said officers said Company shall forthwith elect other persons in
<br />place of those whom the Council refused to confirm, and submit their names
<br />to the Council at its next regular meeting for confirmation.
<br />SEC. 443• Chief - His Duties and Powers.
<br />(A) The chief, or in his absence, the assitant chief, shall have control
<br />over all members of the Fire Department while in service at fires, and may for
<br />insubordination thereat, suspend any member from service for such a period as
<br />he may deem proper with the privilege of appeal to the Company at its next
<br />regular meeting. Said chief and assitant and the Police Officers of the City
<br />shall exclude all persons from buildings and grounds adjacent thereto, during
<br />a fire, and no person, except City officials and employees in the discharge
<br />of their duties, shall have the right to enter within the ropes surrounding
<br />such fire, except owners of proi..erty thereat, or such other persons as may
<br />obtain permission of the chief or his assistant. Said officers shall have
<br />authority to take into custody all persons persisting in any interference l-;ith
<br />the work of the Fire Company, and upon conviction, such person shall be fined
<br />not less than $5.00 and not more than ;10.00. It shall be the duty of the chief,
<br />or whoever shall act as such, to keep a record of all fires, their place and
<br />time of occurrence, and shall ascertain if possible, the cause of such fire, the
<br />amount of insurance, if any, and actual loss, and make report thereof to the
<br />City Manager for each month by the tenth of the next month. He shall make such
