300 <br />of said City within one mile of the City limits thereof unless and until the <br />person, firm or corporation proposing to exhibit shall have given bond payable <br />to the City of Ch,_:rlottesville with security approved by the Chief of Police <br />in the sum of $1000.00, with the condition that such person, firm or corpora- <br />tion will not exhibit or permit the exhibition of any indecent or immoral show <br />and will not permit the maintenance or operation of any illegal game of chance <br />on the exhibition grounds. Proof of the exhibition of any immoral or indecent <br />show or of the open maintenance and operation of an illegal game of chance on <br />the premises occupied by such carnival or other exhibition shall be prima facie <br />evidence that such game of chance or indecent show was maintained and operated <br />with the consent of the proprietor of the said carnival or exhibition. The <br />proprietor of any carnival or other like exhibition who permits exhibition of <br />any immoral or indecent show or the maintenance or operation of any illegal ' <br />game of chance on the premises occupied by said carnival within the City of <br />Charlottesville or outside the said City within one mile of the City limits <br />shall be deemed guilty of a misdemeanor and shall be subject to a fine of not <br />less than $50.00 and not more than $250;00 for each violation. And said <br />proprietor and the surety on his bond hereinabove mentioned shall be liable <br />under said bond for any fine imposed hereunder. <br />This ordinance shall be in full force and effect from the date of its passage <br />and all ordinances or parts of ordinances in conflict therewith are hereby repealed. <br />Adopted by the Council April 20, 1942. <br />Ayes: Mr. Gleason, Dr. Haden, Mr. Huff, <br />Mr. Nash, and Mr. Peyton. <br />Noes: None. <br />Presiden <br />AN ORDINANCE RESTRICTING THE USE OF CITY WATER <br />BE IT ORDAINED by the Council of the City of Charlottesville that on account of <br />the emergency existing by reason of the shortage of the City water supply, it shall be <br />unlawful to use water fro;n the city water supply for the purpose of washing sidewalks, <br />driveways or steps, or for the puri-ose of watering, by hose or pipe, lawns, gardens, <br />shrubs or trees. <br />Violation of this ordinance shall be punished by a fine of not less than $45.00 <br />or imprisonment for not more than ten aays or both. Water service to any person who <br />violates this ordinance may be suspended by the City Manager until the repeal of this <br />ordinance. <br />This ordinance shall be in force from its passage. <br />Adopted by the Council May 4, 1942 <br />Ayes: Mr. Gleason, Mr. Huff, Mr. Nash, <br />and Mr. Peyton. <br />Noes: None. <br />C President <br />ANNUAL TAX LEVY I14POSING TAXES Oil PERSONS AND PROPERTY FOR THE PAYMENT <br />OF INTEREST ON THE CITY DEBT, FOR CREATING A SINKING FUND THEREFOR, FOR THE <br />SUPPORT OF THE CITY GOVERNMENT AND CITY SCHOOLS, AND FOR OTHER PURPOSES. <br />BE IT ORDAINED by the Council of the City of Ch-..rlottesville that for the year <br />beginning on the first day of January, 1942, and ending the thirty-first day of December, <br />1942, and each year thereafter while this ordinance is in force, the taxes on persons <br />and property for local purposes shall be as follows: <br />GYRAL LEVY: <br />1. Land, Lots and Buildings. <br />On tracts of land and lots and improvements thereon, not exempt from taxation, <br />there shall be a tax of $0.95 (ninety-five cents) on every $100.00 assessed value <br />thereof to pay the general operating expenses of the City Government and to pay the <br />interest and sinking fund on the City debt other than schools, and there shall be <br />levied an additional tux on every $100.00 assessed value of$0.25 (twenty-five cents) <br />to pay the interest and sinking fund on school bonds and P'O.80 (eighty cents) for <br />the maintenance and operating of the City schools. <br />2.
