MICHIE~ SR. <br /> <br />RESOLUTION RE: <br />BURKETT ARHISTEAD <br />RENNOLDS;3 <br /> <br /> WHEREAS, HiS RETiremeNT FROH ACTIVE SERVICE IN OUR PUBLIC SCHOOL SYSTEM I$ <br />VIEWED BY THE PEOPLE OF THiS CIty, AND BY THE MEMBERS OF THIS COUNCIL W~TH GREAT <br />REGRET; NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT <br /> <br />3.2 <br /> <br /> RESOLVED BY THE COUNCIL Of THE CITY OF CHARLOTTESVILLE THAT WE, WHO HAVE <br />W~TNESSED THE BENEFITS OUR SCHOOLS HAVE RECEIVED UNDER HiS LEADERSHIP, DO HEREBY <br />EXPRESS TO EDWARD W. RUSHTON OUR HEARTFELT GRATITUDE AND OUR HOPE THAT HIS RETIREMENT <br />WILLIT FURTHER. PROVE AS FRUITFUL AND:REWARDING AS HIS CAREER AS AN EDUCATOR HAS BEEN; AND BE <br /> <br /> RESOLVED THAT THE CLERK OF THE COUNCIL BE DIRECTED TO SEND A COPY OF THIS <br />RESOLUTION TO DR. RUSHTON. <br /> <br /> ON MOTION BY MR. GiLLIAM~ SECONDED BY MR. BARBOUR THE FOLLOWING RESOLUTION WAS <br />UNANIMOUSLY ADOPTED. <br /> <br /> WHEREAS~ THOMAS J. MICHIE, SR. SERVED THIS CItY AS A MEMBER OF COUNCIL FROM <br />1954 TO 1960~ AND AS MAYOR FOR THE LAST TWO YEARS OF THAT PERIOD, WITH DISTINCTION, <br />DigNitY, AND HONOR; AND <br /> <br /> WHEREAS, HE LED HIS FELLOW CITIZENS WITH COURAGE, WISDOM~ AND DEDICATION TO <br />THE PRINCIPLES OF LAW AND ORDER, DURING THE SCHOOL CRISIS OF THAT GRAVE PERIOD, THEREBY <br />SETTING THEM AN EXAMPLE WHICH PRESERVED PEACE AND PUBLIC EDUCATION FOR THIS COMMUNITY; <br />AND ELSEWHERE IN VIRGINIA; AND <br /> <br /> WHEREAS, HE SERVED HIS COUNTRY DEVOTEDLY AS A DISTINGUISHED MEMBER Of THE BAR <br />AND IN COUNTLESS OTHER CAPACITIES~ ESPECIALLY DURING HIS TERM AS JUDGE OF THE UNITED <br />STATES DISTRICT COURT OF THE ~ESTERN DISTRICT OF VIRGINIA. <br /> <br /> NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE COUNCIL OF THE CItY OF CHARLOTTESVILLE, <br />THAT WE, THE INHERITORS OF HIS GOOD INSTLRCTtON, DO HEREBY EXPRESS OUR GRATITUDE FOR <br />HIS SELFLESSNESS~ INTEGRITY, AND INTELLECT, AND REGISTER OUR SENSE OF LOSS AT HIS <br />DEATH ON APRIL 9; 1973; WITH THE SURE AND CERTAIN KNOWLEDGE THAT MEMORY OF HIS <br />ACHIEVEMENTS WILL NOT BE FOREGOTTEN. <br /> <br /> BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED THAT A COPY OF THIS RESOLUTION BE SENT TO THE MEMBERS <br />OF HIS IMMEDIATE FAMILY. <br /> <br /> ON MOtiON BY MRS. RINEHART, SECONDED BY MR. BARBOUR THE FOLLOWING RESOLUTION WAS <br />UNANIMOUSLY ADOPTED. <br /> <br /> WHEREAS, BURKETT ARMISTEAD RENNOLDS SERVED THIS CITY AS A MEMBER OF COUNCIL <br />FROM 196~ TO 1966 AND AS MAYOR FROM 1966 TO 1968 WITH CONSCIENTIOUSNESS AND ENTHUSIASM; <br /> <br /> WHEREAS, HE MADE MANY CONTRIBUTIONS TO THE PUBLIC WELFARE OF THIS CITY IN <br />THE ORDERLY FULFILLMENT OF HIS DUTIES~ ESPECIALLY IN THE DIFFICULT AREA OF HOUSING, <br />TO PREVENT THE SPREAD OF SLUMS AND TO REALIZE THE GOAL OF DECENT HOMES FOR ALL OUR <br />CITIZENS; AND <br /> <br />AND <br /> <br /> WHEREAS, HE PERFORMED HIS DUTIES WITH BENEFICENCE AND MODESTY DESPITE HIS <br />DEMANDING TASKS AS AN EXECUTIVE IN THE TRANSPORTATION INDUSTRY. <br /> <br /> NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE COUNCil OF THE CITY OF CHARLOTTESVILLE, <br />THAT HIS ACCOMPLISHMENTS IN THE COURSE OF OFFICE BE GRATEFULLY ACKNOWLEDGED AND THAT <br />EXPRESSION OF OUR SORROW BE MADE Fee HIS UNTIMELY DEATH ON APRIL ~, 1973. <br /> <br /> BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED THAT A COPY OF THIS RESOLUTION BE SENT TO THE MEMBERS OF <br />HIS IMMEDIATE FAMILY. <br /> <br /> ON MOTION BY MR. BARBOUR, MR. FIFE~ MR. GILLIAM, MRS. RINEHART AND <br />MR. VAN YAHRES. NOES: NONE. <br /> <br />ON MOTION THE MEETING ADJOURNED. <br /> <br />PUBLIC HEARING RE: <br />RIVANNA WATER AND <br />SEWER AUTHORITY <br /> <br />PRES I DENT <br /> <br />COUNCIL CHAMBER - JUNE 4, 1973 <br /> <br /> THE COUNCIL MET IN REGULAR SESSION ON THIS DATE WITH THE FOLLOWING MEMBERS PRESENT: <br /> <br /> MR. BARBOUR, MR. FIFE, MR. GILLIAM, MRS. RINEHART AND MR. VAN YAHRES. ABSENT: NONE <br /> THE MINUTES OF THE MEETING OF ~AY 21, 1973 WERE APPROVED AS CORRECTED. <br /> <br /> A PUBLIC HEARING WAS HELD ON THIS DATE ON A PROPOSAL TO ESTABLISH ~HE RIVANNA WATER <br />AND SEWER AUTHORITY WHICH WOULD PROVIDE WHOLESALE WATER AND SEWAGE TREATMENT SERVICE TO <br />THE CITY AND COUNTY. THE CITY HANAGER EXPLAINED THE CONDITIONS OF THE PROPOSED CONTRACT. <br />SPEAKING IN SUPPORT WERE THE LEAGUE OF WOMEN VOTERS AND MR. CHANNING DANIEL~ PRESIDENT OF <br />THE CHAMBER OF COMMERCE. SPEAKING IN OPPOSITION WAS ~R. LIONEL KEY, QUESTIONING WHETHER THE <br />PROPOSED CONTRACT HAD BEEN ADEQUATELY PUBLICIZED. ON MOTION BY MRS. RINEHART~ SECONDED BY <br /> <br /> <br />
