PRESENTATION: <br />ITALIAN EXCHANGE <br />PROGRAM <br /> <br />PRESENTATION: <br />CENTRAL PLACE <br />DEVELOPMENT DESIGN <br /> <br /> jurors, and serves jury notices. The Sheriff's Department is <br /> responsible for the transportation of inmates from jail to court, <br /> of the mentally ill to' institutions upon commitment, and of <br /> prisoners traveling intrastate. Courtroom security is provided by <br /> the Sheriff's Department, as are guards for hospitalized prisoners. <br /> <br /> The Sheriff's Department operates on a budget of $185,799, <br /> <br /> $60,474 of which is'paid by the City. The Department travels approxi- <br /> <br /> mately 50,000 miles a year and serves approximately 20,000 papers. <br /> <br /> Mr. Conover asked Sheriff Norford~if anything new was forthcoming <br /> <br /> in the next year and if there was-any way City Council could be helpful. <br /> <br /> Sheri££~Norford responded that he was presently working with .Mr. <br /> <br /> O'Connell to try to find ~ays in which new employees could be hired. <br /> <br /> Mr. Buck asked What impact the cutting back of State funds had had <br /> <br /> on the Sheriff's Department. Sheriff Norford replied that $8,000 had <br /> been cut from his travel allowance and that additional funds were needed <br /> in this area. He added that most duties of his Department were~mandated <br /> by State law and he was presently operating with a skeleton crew. <br /> <br /> Dr. Hall and Mr. Buck thanked Sheriff Norford for his continued hard <br /> <br /> work and his report to CoUncil. <br /> <br /> Dr. Pete. Eberhart, Assistant Superintendent of Charlottesville <br /> <br />Schools, addressed Council regarding the Italian-American Student <br />Exchange Program presently underway which is being sponsored by the <br />Charlottesville and Albemarle County governments, Charlottesville and <br />Albemarle School Boards, and the Chamber of Commerce. He stated that <br />twenty Charlottesville and Albemarle County students h~ad been visiting <br />the sister cities of Charlottesville and Albemarle, Prato and Poggio a <br />Caiano, and were due to return to Charlottesville later in the evening. <br />Twenty Italian students are due to arrive for a month-long visit in <br />Charlottesville and Albemarle County on July 29th. Ail reports received <br />from the American students had indicated that they had had an outstanding <br />visit. <br /> <br /> Dr. Eberhart reported that the Chamber of Commerce had raised <br /> <br />$?,600 and hoped to raise a total of $10,000 for the program. All but a <br />few ho:st families for the Italian students had been secured. Dr. Eberhart <br />stated that 'the Planning Committee was presently working on the itinerary <br />and budget for the Italian students' visit and that additional funds would, <br />in all probability, be required. <br /> <br /> Mrs. Gleason said she felt the Exchange Program was a grand idea. <br /> <br />D~. Eberhart thanked Council for their continued support of the program. <br />M~. O'Connell reported to Council that the Design Committee had <br />approved and reco~ended the design submitted by the developers of Central <br />Place. <br /> <br /> Mz. Craig Redinger, a partner in the Central Place Project, indicated <br /> <br />to Council that the project was moving along quickly and that he and his <br />partners would in all probability exercise the option to purchase the <br />Paramount Theatre. He said a decision would be made on this purchase by <br />~mid-August. He stated they were seeking a private institutional purchaser <br />for Industrial Revenue Bonds for the Central Place project. Mr. Redinger <br />introduced his previously unannounced partner in the project, Mr. Ludwig <br />Kuttner. <br /> <br /> <br />
