Noes: None. <br /> The $208,000 appropriation for the Community Development <br />Block Grant Jobs Bill Program which was offered at the meeting of <br />July 18th was approved by the following vote. Ayes: Mr. BuCk, <br />Mrs. Gleason, Dr. Gunter, Dr. Hall. Noes~: None. <br /> The $30,000 appropriation for asbestos removal from City <br /> schools which was offered at the meeting of July 27th, was approved <br /> by the. following vote. Ayes: Mr. Buck, Mrs. Gleason, Dr. Gunter, <br /> Dr. Hall. Noes: None. <br /> Mr. Hendrix reported that the Community Service Officer <br /> Programhad been successfully opera.ting .in Westhayen, but as addi- <br /> tional housing units had been added, there was a need for an <br /> additional officer. Mr. Hendrix stated that both Mr. John deKoven <br /> Bowen, Chief of Police, and M.r. Gene Arrington, Director of the Housing <br /> Authority, were in favor of the recommendation. <br /> Mrs. Gleason and Dr. Hall .agreed that the Community Service Officers <br /> had proven their value. <br /> Dr. Hall moved, Dr. Gunter seconded, and the following appropriation <br /> was carried over to the next meeting. <br /> <br /> Be it Resolved by the Council of the City of Charlottesville, <br /> Virginia that'the sum of $14.,000.00 is hereby appropriated from <br /> the unappropriated balance of the General Fund to expenditure <br /> account 01-21030 for the employment by the City Police Department <br /> of a community service officer for the First Street public housing <br /> project. <br /> <br /> Mr. Buck stated that he would abstain from consideration of <br /> <br /> the' appropriation and asked Mrs'. Gleason to lead the discussion. <br /> Dr. John Bberhart, Assistant Superintendent of Charlottesville <br /> Schools, described the Italian Exchange Program that was jointly <br /> sponsored by the City and County governments and private citizens. <br /> American students had visited Prato and Poggio a Caiano, Italy, sister <br /> cities to Charlottesville and Albemarle County in July, and the Italian <br /> students were visiting the Charlottesville area for the month of August. <br /> Dr. Bberhart-asked for the appropriation of $4,750 to cover the costs <br /> of .travel, overnight expenses, and admission fees for the students. He <br /> added that an identical request was being made to the Albemarle County <br /> Board of Supervisors. <br /> Mrs. Gleason stated that the Italian students had arrived-in <br /> Charlottesville the previous Friday night and were met by the American <br /> students with a great deal of. enthusiasm. <br /> <br /> Dr. Gunter moved the appropriation, Dr. Hall seconded, and the <br /> following appropriation was carried over to the next meeting: <br /> Be it Resolved by the Council of the City of Charlottesville, <br /> Virginia, that the sum of $4,750.00, or as much thereof as may be <br /> necessary, is hereby appropriated from the unappropriated balance <br /> of the General Fund to expenditures account for the City's share <br /> of the cost of arrangements for the visit of exchange students from <br /> Poggio a Caiano and Prato, Italy. <br /> <br /> Mr. Hendrix stated that the State Library Board required annual <br /> approval for the Jefferson-Madison Regional Library to expend the- <br /> $358,952 in State aid to the library fund. <br /> <br /> Dr. Hall moved, Dr. Gunter seconded, and the resolution was unani- <br /> <br />mously approved. <br /> <br /> <br />
