1:46 <br /> <br />o <br /> <br />o <br /> <br />10. <br /> <br />11. <br /> <br />12. <br /> <br />13. <br /> <br />Entrance <br /> <br />All doors should have a minimum clear opening of 2'8" <br />the door opens outward, a 5' x 5' platform should be <br />provided that extends 1' on either side of the door. <br />Horizontal level door handles are preferable and should <br />not be more than 3'6" from the floor. If non-slip mats <br />are used, they should be no more than 1/2" in thickness. <br />Wherever.~.possible, automatic doors should be used in <br />businesses, industrial and public establishments. <br /> <br />If <br /> <br />Kitchens <br /> <br />A U~shaped area with a 5' tu~.ning radius is preferable. <br />Since the kitchen area will be used by both handicapped <br />and able-bodied people, counters can be 36" high if low, <br />pull_.-out countertop work space is provided at 30" with <br />a 29" clearance underneath, The sink may be of regular <br />height but should be open underneath with insulated <br />plumbing to prevent burns. Appliances should have front <br />controls. The oven should have a side approach and <br />the refrigerator stove and sink require counterspace next <br />to them. Adequate low storage with brackets rather than <br />knob handles are neeessary, Pullout shelves, lazy <br />susans, switches should be within easy reach. <br /> <br />Elevator Requirements <br /> <br />If interior access in multi-story buildings is provided <br />by eleVator(s), at least one (!) elevator shall meet the <br />following requirements listed below: <br /> <br />A. The elevator cab shall have a clear area of not less than <br /> twenty-five (25) square feet with a minimum dimension <br /> of fifty-six (56) inches. <br /> B. The elevator door shall have a minimum clear opening <br /> width of thirty-two (32) inches. <br />C. The floor and control buttons shall be located not more <br /> than sixty (60) inches above the floor. <br /> D. Braille plates shall~be provided adjacent to all cab <br /> control buttons and switches. <br /> <br />E. Braille plates shall be provided for floor designation <br /> on each floor, sixty (60~ inches above the floor, on <br /> the fixed point at the open side of the elevator. <br />F. Elevators should be so adjusted that the floor of the <br /> elevator when stopped will conform exactly to the <br /> building floor level. <br /> <br />Hallways <br /> <br />Hallways should provide adequate room to turn into doorways. <br /> <br />Stairways <br /> <br />The landings and floor levels of stairways should be <br />distinguished from Stairs by contrasting color or <br />texture and handrails should not be less than 32" h~gh. <br />Risers shall not exceed 7" <br /> <br />Storage <br /> <br />Storage areas should be low and easily reached. <br />rods and shelves should be no higher than 54". <br /> <br />Closet <br /> <br />Windows <br /> <br />Windows should be low and easily opened. <br />are preferable. <br /> <br />Crank openings <br /> <br />Information <br /> <br />~isual signals and signs should be provided with emergency <br />alarm systems. Information at transit terminals and <br />public buildings should also be visual as well as audible. <br /> <br />Curb Cuts <br /> <br />Where a curb exists between a parking lot surface and a <br />sidewalk surface, an inclined curb approach or a curb cut <br />with a gradient of not more than one (1) foo~tin twelve <br />(12) feet and a width of not less than four (4) feet shall <br />be provided for wheelchair access. Curb cuts at inter- <br />sections should be off-set to'protect the blind. <br /> <br /> <br />
