Public hearing re: <br />Sidewalk priorities <br /> <br /> Ms. Gail Comras of 1623 Meridian Street urged Council to <br /> consider the plight of. working and fixed-income people whose <br /> own conservation efforts are penalizing them in high rates. <br /> <br /> Mr..Richard Jones of the Blue Ridge Apartment Council read <br /> <br /> a letter to Council, a copy of which is enclosed in the file of <br /> the minutes of this meeting, nrging Council to consider using <br /> th~ step rate rather than the flat rate. Mr. Chuck Rodkin of <br /> the Romebuildera Ass.ociation endorsed Mr. Jones' statements~and <br /> Brought up the matter of summer gas air conditioning rates and <br /> asked t~at th.ese he studied as current users may switch to <br /> electricity if the rates become too high. <br /> <br /> Council requested that staff furnish information about <br /> various alternatives brought up during the public hearing as <br /> well as suggestions by, consumers and consumer advocates. Mr. <br /> Robert Sheets, Finance Director, agreed to let the Mayor know <br /> by Wednesday when the department could provide this.information. <br /> <br /> Mr. Cole Hendrix, City Manager, reviewed the status of the <br /> sidewalk program as it currently stands. The City has $50,000 <br /> available for improvements but needs priorities set by Council <br /> to proceed with the work. The Planning Commission's recommenda- <br /> tions were available for public comment. <br /> <br /> Mr. E.P. Houaely of Stadium Road requested that this street <br /> have a sidwalk buitl because of the heavy vehicle and pedestrian <br /> traffic. <br /> <br /> Ms. Phoebe Sellers spoke in favor of Dice Street from 6th <br /> Street to 5th Street because of the schoolchildren who must walk <br /> this stretch. <br /> <br /> Mr, Albro asked what cost estimates, if any, could be <br />attached to th~se recommendations. Mr. Hendrix said detailed <br />estimates were not yet available but suggested a roughs figure <br />of about $10~$20 per linear foot when retaining walls and easements <br />are not necessary. <br /> <br /> Mr. John Buckman of 1831~Brandywine Drive said this street <br />needs sidewalks becugse of the extreme danger for pedestrians <br />and bicycle traffic, <br /> <br /> Mr. William D. Coleman o£ 705 Rockland Avenue read a letter <br />from the Belmont NeighborhOod Association detailing the Belmont <br />~treeta that need sidewalk improvements. A copy of this letter <br />is in tke file with the minntes of this meeting. <br /> <br /> Mr. Dave Nelson o£ 1504 Dairy Road urged consideration of <br />sidewalk~ on Dairy Road~ <br /> <br /> Mr~ H~ W~ Simonds o£ 506 Valley Road spoke for the Jefferson <br />Park Avenue Neighborhood Association and urged support for the <br />Stadium Ro~d project~ <br /> <br />307 <br /> <br /> <br />
