PERFORMING ARTS CENTER <br /> <br /> Mr. Cox said that there has been a gras sroots effort to rename the Charlottesville <br />Performing Arts Center in honor of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. <br /> <br /> Ms. Linda Bowen, 716 Palatine Avenue, Chair of the School Board, said that on <br />April 1 the School Board unanimously approved changing the name of th e Performing <br />Arts Center, with one amendment, that being naming it the Martin Luther King, Jr. <br />Performing Arts Center of Charlottesville. <br /> <br /> The public hearing was opened. <br /> <br /> Ms. Cindy Stratton, representing the Albemarle - Charlottesville Branch of the <br />NAACP, presented a resolution in support of renaming the Center, and asked Council to <br />endorse the action of the School Board. <br /> <br /> Dr. Alvin Edwards, 614 Beechwood Drive, representing the Martin Luther King, <br />Jr. Celebration Committee, said the Committee has over 80 0 signatures on a petition in <br />support of renaming the Center, and said this is an opportunity to commemorate Dr. <br />King. <br /> <br /> Mr. Charles Lilly, 804 Druid Avenue, said that if the Center needs to be renamed <br />it should be after someone from Virginia such as Gover nor Douglas Wilder who he <br />thinks is a great man. <br /> <br /> Rev. Jim Bundy, 305 Cedar Bluff Road, spoke in favor of the resolution, and said <br />he feels the action is long overdue. He said he is gratified by the School Board vote. He <br />said he has felt that having n othing named for Dr. King has sent a negative message. He <br />said renaming the Center after Dr. King would honor his ideals of racial justice, peace <br />and equality. He said the Performing Arts Center may not be the perfect place, but the <br />longer we debate wher e the perfect place is, the longer it takes to name something for Dr. <br />King. <br /> <br /> At the request of Ms. Stratton, a number of people in the audience raised their <br />hands in support of the resolution. <br /> <br /> As there were no further speakers, the public hearing was c losed. <br />
