Encroaching developments: impact on neighborhoods; gentrification; loss of historical <br /> structures; loss of connectivity (community) <br />Rude/careless driving; pedestrian safety issues <br />Lack interjurisdictional cooperation; development on City perimeter <br />University of Virginia taking property; educational-industrial complex: more business, <br /> less education <br />Limit tax base; land locked <br />Business competition with County <br />Press <br />Student stress on neighborhoods: noise, cars, trash <br />Rising cost of living: middle income pinch; insurance, etc. <br />Loss of natural resources: trees, water <br /> <br />Core Vision Themes: Symbolic of What Charlottesville Is (Now and in Future) <br /> <br />These themes need to be developed as the core vision or preamble and "attached" to the <br />strategic vision targets, perhaps by a transition sentence. <br /> <br />· Intelligent, creative community <br />· Value the public realm - those around us; like to work together to solve problems <br />· Diversity of people, points of view, geography, housing stock, topography <br />· Small town with a cosmopolitan outlook - we look outside of ourselves, well <br /> traveled mentally and physically; lots of different cultures; small town with big <br /> city amenities <br />· Attractive, the beauty of Charlottesville include its natural environment and built <br /> environment <br />· Community that values sustainability, understands resources are finite, <br /> consciously thinks about living on a small footprint while preserving and creating <br /> resources for the next generation <br />· Safe and accessible environment; walk there; "hang out there" <br />· Education is our highest priority, at the top of everyone's list; "The diffusion of <br /> knowledge is the only true guardian of liberty" (James Madison). Education leads <br /> to opportunity. T he community at large is involved in education; diverse <br /> traditions of education that flow through our community going back for decades <br />· There's a "badge of pride" about living in Charlottesville <br />· Strong sense of community - both neighborhood based and as a City of <br /> Charlottesville <br />· We need to be the leaders of regional cooperation; we recognize we can't do <br /> things alone; we partner/lead; with our partners, we are aware of the larger <br /> community we are a part of <br />· The pace is slower but not so slow that it's sleepy <br />· Being #1 for everyone (for the majority) and not just for some people <br /> (opportunity) - even those who are not part of University community; people feel <br /> part - goes back to opportunity/education <br /> <br />Strategic Vision Targets <br /> <br />As the Council came to consensus about the kinds of targets that might need to be <br />addressed to achieve the core vision themes, the notes below were taken to identify the <br />types of topics that might be addressed in the desired future state paragraph. <br /> <br />Economic Development and Employment <br /> <br />Deal with under-employment; job training and development of the workforce; filling high <br />level jobs; getting people in pipeline; address skill gap. Need more diversified economy <br />(not just service jobs) and have to work with County on this. <br /> <br />Housing <br /> <br />Progress on housing, not much affordable housing; home ownership issues; reasonable <br />rent because of abundance. Find the balance; diversity of housing stock (size, type, $ - <br /> <br /> <br />
