<br /> 11 <br /> <br /> Ms. Atkins said that CATEC is one area that is being worked on. She said there <br />is also a career development plan partnership. She said the Alternative School model has <br />to be identified before there can be discussions with Albemarle County. <br /> <br /> Council’s expressed support of this strategy. <br /> <br />Strategy III: Ensure that assistance is in place for students who do not plan to attend <br />college to take advantage of job skill training programs to increase their ability to move <br />up in career ladder jobs <br /> <br /> Ms. Atkins said public relations activities are being done by the Schools to talk <br />about the value of education, and it would be helpful for other agencies to speak with the <br />same language about the value of education. She said businesses could be asked to put <br />statements on their marques. <br /> <br /> Dr. Brown asked about internships, and Ms. Atkins said they would be very <br />important, especially at CATEC. <br /> <br /> Mr. O’Connell said this is also connected to the summer youth program. <br /> <br /> Dr. Brown said he would like to see all areas of students participate in businesses. <br /> <br /> Ms. Atkins said that could be part of the K-12 career development program. <br /> <br /> Ms. Hamilton suggested engaging the arts community as well. She said banners <br />or posters could also be put on City buses. <br /> <br /> Councilors expressed support of this strategy. <br /> <br />Strategy IV: Support the expansion and coordination of life-long learning opportunities <br />through PVCC, CATEC and the Adult Learning Center, such as GED training, workforce <br />development training and ESL <br /> <br /> Responding to a question from Ms. Hamilton, Ms. Atkins said the Adult Learning <br />Center is currently located in the Legal Aid building, but they are looking for space. <br /> Ms. Hamilton suggesting putting the U. Va. Center for Excellence on the list. <br /> <br /> Mr. Lynch suggested housing the Adult Education Center at Jefferson School for <br />as long as we can. <br /> <br /> Mr. O’Connell said that the Schools have proposed a community based <br />committee, where they would take the lead, to deal with the impact of refugees on the <br />community. <br /> <br /> Mr. Lynch suggested having a refugee center to supplement services they are <br />getting in the schools. <br /> <br /> Dr. Brown recommended that input from the Social Services Department or <br />Advisory Board be sought about the refugee committee, and he asked Mr. Norris, a <br />member of the Advisory Board, to take the issue to the Board. <br /> <br /> Ms. Hamilton recommended that the City and Schools jointly develop a charge <br />and composition for the committee. <br /> <br /> Dr. Brown said he is comfortable with the existing language. <br /> <br /> Mr. Lynch said he thinks the goal should be to have the first committee meeting <br />by March 1, 2007 and a major intervention in place by September of 2007, and Ms. <br />Atkins said that is reasonable. <br /> <br /> Councilors expressed support of this strategy. <br /> <br /> <br />
