2
Mr. Lynch suggesting having quarterly meetings with the Albemarle County
Board of Supervisors.

Mr. Jim Tolbert, Director of Neighborhood Development Services, said that the
City and County Planning Commissions are talking about creating a standing group.

Strategy II: Well planned and placed sidewalks, trails and street crossings that connect
neighborhoods and commercial sectors.

Dr. Brown said nothing in this addresses street crossings, and Mr. Tolbert said
that can be added.

Dr. Brown said we should talk about the safety issues of crossings and have a
public education campaign letting people know that they have to stop at crosswalks. Dr.
Brown said we should also have periodic enforcement and additional signage.

Mr. Norris said that the design of sidewalks works as well.

Ms. Hamilton said the flashing light at Washington Park works really well and we
may be able to identify other places to put a flashing light.

Mr. Tolbert said a lot of issues come down to pedestrian safety and sidewalks
would help.

Dr. Brown said that Route 29 is specifically hard for pedestrians to cross.

Ms. Hamilton suggested adding building more sidewalks as an action plan.

Mr. Lynch suggested adding a couple of railroad pedestrian crossings at Douglas
Avenue and Fifeville Park.

Strategy III: Use of intermodal solutions to connect different forms/systems of transit
(bike to bus, park & ride).

Mr. Norris said his preference would be to take Meadowcreek Parkway out and
not mention specific roads. He said he feels other connectors are more important than
Meadowcreek Parkway.

Mr. Tolbert suggested putting that we should complete projects in the six-year
plan.

Mr. Norris said we should specifically encourage the Planning District
Commission’s land use and multi-modal transportation planning.

Strategy IV: U. Va./County/City Transit System that serves all residents, students and
visitors, offering affordable and frequent bus service including incentives to use the
system, a dedicated bus lane on Route 29, rapid transit and rail options.

Dr. Brown suggested adding establishing a regional transit authority.

Mr. Norris said he is not sure he wants to put in remove parking from West Main
Street until we know about the streetcar.

Mr. Tolbert said the off-street parking piece should be added.

Mr. Lynch said he is not sold on the idea of a dedicated lane, and said he thinks
other things can be done.

Mr. O’Connell suggested adding working with the County on enhanced routes to
Albemarle Place.

Mr. Lynch suggested adding Sunday bus service.
