13 <br />NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED <br /> that the Charlottesville City <br />Council: <br /> <br />1. Honors the soldiers of the Monticello Guard for their service and extends its <br />sincere hope for their safe and speedy return to Charlottesville; <br /> <br />2. Encourages citizens and community organizations in Charlottesville to offer their <br />full support to the soldiers being deployed to Iraq, and to the family members they are <br />leaving behind; <br /> <br />3. Implores the President and Congress of the United States to begin an expedient <br />drawdown and redeployment of U.S. forces in Iraq so that the members of the Monticello <br />Guard and the many other American soldiers, sailors, Marines and airmen in Iraq can <br />return to their loved ones as quickly and safely as possible; and, <br /> <br />4. Requests that copies of this resolution be distributed to President George Bush; <br />U.S. Senator John Warner; U.S. Senator James Webb; and Representative Virgil Goode. <br /> <br /> Ms. Hamilton said that Council has received a letter from a citizen about the lack <br />of a pedestrian crossing on Emmet Street. She said she is also concerned about <br />pedestrians crossing McIntire Road at the Omni Hotel. She said that some streets had <br />pedestrian crossing signs that are now missing. She said she would like to take a look at <br />making our pedestrian network safer, including the downtown area. <br /> <br /> Dr. Brown said he thinks that would be a good idea. <br /> <br /> Ms. Hamilton noted that applications for the Planning Commission are due next <br />week. <br /> <br /> Mr. Taliaferro said that staff support is needed to pull information together for the <br />Street Car Task Force, but the City does not have staff to devote to this, so the Task Force <br />is requesting $5,000 from Council reserve for staff for 5 to 10 hours a week for four to <br />five months. <br /> <br /> Dr. Brown asked if that request was the consensus of the Task Force, and Mr. <br />Taliaferro said yes. <br /> <br /> Ms. Hamilton said she thinks we should do whatever we can to help the Task <br />Force. <br /> <br /> Dr. Brown said he thinks it is a small amount to invest for a final report. <br /> <br /> On motion by Mr. Taliaferro, seconded by Ms. Hamilton, Council agreed to <br />provide $5,000 for staffing for the Street Car Task Force out of Council Reserve by the <br />following vote. Ayes: Dr. Brown, Ms. Hamilton, Mr. Lynch, Mr. Norris, Mr. Taliaferro. <br />Noes: None. <br /> <br /> Mr. Taliaferro said he accompanied officials from the Charlottesville-Albemarle <br />Convention and Visitors Bureau to Ashville, North Carolina to observe what they do to <br />promote tourism. He said the goal is to bring more people downtown and to make the <br />City and Albemarle County more of a destination. He said he would like to have Mark <br />Shore, Executive Director of CACVB, report on the visit at an upcoming Council <br />meeting. <br /> <br /> Dr. Brown suggested that Mr. Shore also summarize the City’s investment in <br />tourism when making the report. <br /> <br />th <br /> Mr. Taliaferro asked about the status of the intersection at 8 and Main Street. <br /> <br /> Mr. Tolbert said that staff is committed to taking parking out at that intersection. <br />He said the businesses in that location depend on loading zones, and staff is trying to <br /> <br />
