188 <br /> <br /> Mr. Steven Miller, 918 Druid Avenue and owner of <br />Fantasia on the Corner, stated that the design he was shown <br />did not show the street detail and the merchants were told <br />that the sidewalk would only extend as far as the parking <br />spaces which were eliminated. Mr. Miller acknowledged that <br />he was in the minority, but he would like to see the turn <br />lane reinstated quickly rather than waiting until later. He <br />requested that Council commit to fixing the problem at the <br />appropriate time. <br /> <br />PROCLAMATION: CHARLOTTESVILLE-MUNICIPAL BAND <br /> <br /> On motion by Mr. Toscano, seconded, by Ms. Slaughter, <br />Council unanimously approved a proclamation recognizing the <br />Charlottesville Municipal Band on its 70th anniversary. <br /> <br /> WHEREAS, the Charlottesville Municipal Band is among the <br />oldest such organizations in the country, having been <br />established in 1922; and <br /> <br /> WHEREAS, the Municipal Band held is first concert on May <br />28, 1923 in Lee Park in the City of Charlottesville; and <br /> <br /> WHEREAS, between 1950 and 1957 the Municipal Band was an <br />official adjunct to the Charlottesville Volunteer Fire <br />Company and won numerous awards marching in the Firemen's <br />Parade; and <br /> <br /> WHEREAS, women joined the previously all men band in <br />July of 1957; and <br /> <br /> WHEREAS, the Municipal Band has played for several <br />Presidents of the United States and for the Queen of England; <br />and <br /> <br /> WHEREAS, the Municipal Band has grown to almost 100 <br />musicians who come from all walks of life and professions and <br />who perform for the community year-round free of charge; <br /> <br /> NOW, THEREFORE, we, the City Council of the City of <br />Charlottesville, Virginia do hereby recognize the <br />Charlottesville Municipal Band on its 70th anniversary and <br />thank its members, both past and present, for representing <br />Charlottesville around the State and for providing the <br />Charlottesville community with quality musical entertainment. <br /> <br /> Mr. Vandever presented the proclamation to Mr. James <br />Simmons and Mr. Tom Bibb of the Municipal Band. <br /> <br />APPOINTMENTS: BOARDS AND COMMISSIONS <br /> <br /> On motion by Ms. Slaughter, seconded by Mr. Toscano, the <br />following appointments were made to the Community Development <br />Block Grant Task Force: Ms. Virginia Coffey-Taylor <br />(reappointed to three year term as Fifeville neighborhood <br />representative, term to expire May 31, 1995); Mr. Gregory <br />Childress (appointed to three year term as 10th & Page. <br />neighborhood representative, term to expire May 31, 1995); <br />and Mr. Herman Key (reappointed as citizen to two year term, <br />term to expire May 31, 1994). <br /> <br /> On motion by Ms. Daugherty, seconded by Ms. Slaughter, <br />Mr. Ron Roberts was unanimously reappointed and Ms. Rebecca <br />A. Convery appointed to four year terms on the Highway Safety <br />Commission. These terms will expire on June 30, 1996. <br /> <br /> On motion by Ms. Slaughter, seconded by Ms. Daugherty, <br />Mr. Steven M. Friedman was unanimously reappointed and Mr. <br />Bill M. A. Igbani appointed to three year terms on the Region <br />Ten Community Services Board. These terms will expire on <br />June 30, 1995. <br /> <br />On motion by Mr. Toscano, seconded by Ms. Daugherty, Mr. <br /> <br /> <br />
