Mr. Towe added that he would like <br />to know if the State would agree to fund the position. <br /> <br /> Ms. Waters questioned Whether'the information requested <br />could be provided by the next meeting. <br /> <br /> Mr. steVe Deaton, commonwealth's Attorney, stated that <br />it will not be known.for some time whether the CompensatiOn <br />Board will fund the position. Mr. Deaton added that it <br />was his understanding that the decision to fund an <br />additional position is based on population. Mr. Deaton <br />stated that he felt the information prOvided to Council to <br />date was more beneficial than historical information. <br /> <br /> Mr. Buck Stated that he.did not think his request for <br />information was different than had been 'asked for and <br />expected in the past. <br /> <br /> Mr. Deaton listed the number of cases handled by his <br />office in 1987, 1988 and 1989 and noted that the only salary <br />paid by the City is one-half of the victim Witness <br />coordinator. <br /> <br /> Mr. Buck made a motion to amend the appropriation by <br />deferring only that portion of the appropriation for the <br />Assistant Commonwealth's Attorney until the next meeting when <br />the following information could be provided: staffing history <br />and, to the extent possible, case load trends for the past <br />ten years; a comparison of the case load in Charlottesville <br />with other localities (number of attorneys per caseS); and <br />the criteria used by the Compensation Board for funding <br />additional positions. Mr. Towe seconded the motion to amend. <br /> <br /> The amendment to the appropriation was defeated by the <br />following vote~ Ayes: Mr. Buck and Mr. Towe. Noes: Rev. <br />Edwards, Mr. Vandever, Ms. Waters. <br /> <br /> The $69,530 .appropriation for the Drug Program which was <br />offered at the February 5th meeting was approved by the <br />following vote.
