• Pg. 6 (4) A bachelor's degree in the study of engineering in a curriculum directly related to the area of expertise, plus one (1) year of practical experience in the specified area of expertise. Section 5.05-10. Examination for determination of qualifications; source; administration; frequency of offering. (a) Each applicant for level one or level two certification must successfully answer in writing seventy-five percent of the questions on an examination to be administered in writing by the building official. (b) The examination shall be based on the current pertinent provisions of the Statewide Building Code and shall be provided to the building official by the Virginia Department of Housing and Community Development to be administered in accordance with standards established by the director of such department. After certification or denial of certification, the building official shall return the graded exams to such department. • (c) The building official shall offer the examination to prospective applicants at least once every three months at a location reasonably accessible to the applicants. Any person failing to pass the examination may retake the examination; provided, that at least six months pass between examinations. If such person fails a second or subsequent time, one year must pass before the exam is retaken. Section 5.05-11. Alternate qualification methods. (a) Determination by the State Board of Contractors of compli- ance with the requirements for licensing as a Class "A" contractor is deemed substantial compliance with the requirements of this article which relate to level two certification and waives the necessity for formal compliance with such requirement or for payment of a certification fee. (b) Workers certified under an apprenticeship program which is approved by the Virginia Apprenticeship Council shall not be required to be examined locally, to obtain a local certificate or to pay a local certificate fee. Section 5.05-12. Reciprocity; exemption. • (a) Workers certified in other Virginia localities, according to state certification standards, need not be certified by the city in order to do work or supervise work within the city. Certification from other states will be considered on an individual basis.
