unreduced early retirement if the member's retirement is within five (5) years of the date of <br />• election to purchase prior service credit. This paragraph shall not apply to a member who elects <br />to purchase prior service pursuant to this section and who makes such election within ninety (90) <br />days of the enactment of this section, or within ninety (90) days of the date that the member <br />completes five (5) years of creditable service with the City, whichever occurs later. No more than <br />five (5) years of credit for prior service may be purchased by a member. <br />(d) At the member's option, payment may be made either in a lump sum or by payroll <br />deduction in equal installments over a period not to exceed the service credit being purchased. <br />Should the deduction be terminated prior to purchasing the entire period which might otherwise <br />be credited, the member shall be credited with the number of additional months of service for <br />which payments are made. If the deduction is continued beyond the point at which the entire <br />period has been purchased, the member shall be credited with no more than the entire period <br />which might otherwise have been credited and the excess amount deducted shall be refunded to <br />the member. Any purchase of prior service made within ninety (90) days of the member's <br />effective date of retirement shall be made by a lump sum payment. Termination of coverage; termination of service; retirement. <br />(a) Effective January 1, 1985 city contributions to the expense of any employee's health <br />care coverage shall cease as of the last day of the month during which any such employee leaves <br />city service without retiring either for service or disability, even if such employee may be a <br />vested member of the city's supplemental retirement or pension plan and eligible to retire under <br />such plan in the future.
