NOW, THEREFORE, the City Council of the City of <br />Charlottesville would like to recognize the superb efforts of <br />the entire Charlottesville High School Football Team and <br />congratulate them on their outstanding season. <br /> <br />PRESENTATION: "OLD DOMINION" SONG CLARK ELEMENTARY SCHOOL <br /> <br /> Ms. Adele Abrahamse, author of the song entitled "Old <br />Dominion," stated that a General Assembly subcommittee has <br />endorsed "Old Dominion" as the new State song. Ms. <br />Abrahamse stated that she hoped that song would be adopted <br />as an inspiration to school children as the present State <br />song had been. <br /> <br /> Mr. Scott Hamrick, Principal of Clark Elementary <br />School, introduced the 4th and 5th grade chorus who <br />performed "Old Dominion." Mr. Hamrick stated that the <br />chorus sang the song for the General Assembly subcommittee <br />and has actively participated in the legislative process. <br /> <br />PRESENTATION: VENABLE ELEMENTARY SCHOOL RENOVATIONS <br /> <br /> Mr. Bob Moje, architect for the Venable School <br />renovations, presented the preliminary renovation plans to <br />the Council and noted that the plans have been submitted to <br />the State Board of Education following approval by the <br />Charlottesville School Board, pending Council's approval. <br />Mr. Moje stated that the principle change from earlier plans <br />was that a new drop-off point for buses would be added on <br />the Venable School property off 14th Street. Mr. Moje <br />stated that all five levels of the school are scheduled to <br />be made handicapped-accessible, new air conditioning and <br />heating systems will be added, and that in order to keep <br />within budget, the gym and auditorium renovations will be <br />bid as alternates.~ <br /> <br /> Mr. Moje stated that the cost for asbestos removal may <br />increase due to additional federal legislation which is <br />being investigated at this time. <br /> <br /> On motion by Mr. Barnes, seconded by Dr. Hall, Council <br />unanimously approved the preliminary plans as presented. <br /> <br />APPOINTMENTS: BOARDS AND COMMISSIONS <br /> <br /> On motion by Mrs. Gleason, Council unanimously <br />appointed Ms. Ann H. Sullivan to a two-year term on the <br />Jefferson Area Board for Aging. This term will expire on <br />August 1, 1989. <br /> <br /> On motion by Dr. Hall, Mr. JameslBrown was unanimously <br />reappointed to a three-year term on the Youth Commission. <br />This term will expire on September 30, 1990. <br /> <br />APPROPRIATION: <br /> <br />(2nd reading) <br /> <br />$44,014.90 - STATE ENTITLEMENT FOR FIRE PROGRAMS <br /> <br /> The $44,014.90 appropriation of the State Entitlement <br />for Fire Programs which was offered at the December 7th <br />meeting, was approved by the following vote. Ayes: Mr. <br />Barnes, Mr. Buck, Mrs. Gleason, Dr. Hall, Mr. Towe. Noes: <br />None. <br /> <br /> BE IT RESOLVED by the Council of the City of <br />Charlottesville, Virginia that the sum of $44,014.90 received <br />in the current fiscal year from the Commonwealth of Virginia <br />for.local operation of fire protection programs is hereby <br />appropriated to expenditure account 11-25080 in the Grants <br />Fund for the purchase of firefighting equipment and related <br />training expenses. <br /> <br />APPROPRIATION: $234,068 - INTEREST ON GENERAL OBLIGATION BONDS, <br />SERIES 1987 (2nd reading) <br /> <br /> <br />
