their lodging tax. <br /> <br /> Mr. Hendrix stated that the County would have to use <br />other funds if the increase in lodging tax was not <br />approved. <br /> <br /> Mr. Towe stated that he felt the convention bureau <br />was one of the better joint efforts by the City and County <br />because he felt tourism is good business for the <br />community. Mr. Towe stated that he felt the State <br />legislators should be urged to approve the County raising <br />its lodging tax. Mr. Towe added that he felt it was <br />important to begin looking for key people to bring <br />Charlottesville to the forefront of tourism and hoped that <br />action would be taken quickly toward securing a convention <br />bureau. <br /> <br /> On motion by Mr. Towe, seconded by Mrs. Gleason, the <br />concept of the convention bureau was unanimously approved <br />by Council. <br /> <br />APPROPRIATION: $15,000 - HANDICAPPED ACCESS - MCGUFFEY ARTS <br />CENTER (2nd reading) <br /> <br /> The $15,000 appropriation for handicapped access to <br />McGuffey Arts Center which was offered at the October 6th <br />meeting, was approved by the following vote. Ayes: Mr. <br />Barnes, Mrs. Gleason, Dr. Hall,Mr. Towe. Noes: None° <br />Absent: Mr. Buck. <br /> <br /> WHEREAS, the City of Charlottesville is committed to <br />making facilities in the City accessible to the <br />handicapped~ now,~therefore, <br /> <br /> BE IT RESOLVED by the Council of the City of <br />Charlottesville, Virginia, that $15,000 be appropriated to <br />expenditure account 05-18610 in the capital projects fund <br />for the purpose of providing funding for the construction <br />of handicapped modifications, including the installation <br />of a wheelchair lift, at the McGuffey Arts Center. Said <br />appropriation is subject to the receipt of a like amount <br />from the Second Street Gallery at the McGuffey Arts <br />Center, base don the Gallery's receipt of a $15,000 grant <br />from the Perry Foundation. <br /> <br />APPROPRIATION: $5,000 - VIRGINIA DISCOVERY MUSEUM (2nd reading) <br /> <br /> The $5,000 appropriation to the Virginia Discovery <br />Museum which was offered at the October 6th meeting, was <br />approved by the following vote. Ayes: Mr. Barnes, Mrs. <br />Gleason, Dro Hall, Mr. Towe. Noes: None. Absent: Mr. <br />Buck. <br /> <br /> BE IT RESOLVED by the Council of the City of <br />Charlottesville, Virginia that the sum of $5,000.00 is <br />hereby appropriated from the unappropriated balance of the <br />General Fund to 01-92560 to be expended as a contribution <br />to the Virginia Discovery Museum, contingent upon the <br />receipt of $5,000.00 in private contributions received by <br />the Virginia Discovery Museum. <br /> <br />APPROPRIATION: $50,000 - URBAN DESIGN PLAN <br /> <br /> Mr. Barnes stated that the appropriation for the <br />Urban Design Plan would~be subject to review should the <br />City receive the $30,000 matching grant from the National <br />Endowment for the Arts. <br /> <br /> On motion by Mrs° Gleason, seconded by Mr. Barnes, <br />the $50,000 appropriation for the Urban Design Plan was <br />offered and carried over to the next meeting for <br />consideration. <br /> <br /> <br />
