truck will need to be replaced within three to five years. <br />A vehicle allowance will be set aside in future years for <br />future purchases of equipment. <br /> <br /> Mr. Barnes requested information on the amount of <br />service provided by the Fire Department to the University of <br />Virginia. <br /> <br /> Fire Chief Julian Taliaferro stated that he would <br />estimate that approximately 20 to 25% of the service <br />provided by the Fire Department is to the University for <br />which no contribution is received. <br /> <br /> Mr. Barnes stated that he felt the City should explore <br />charging the University a fee for the service provided, <br />given its high level. <br /> <br /> Mr. Buck stated that he would raise the issue with the <br />University, but noted that when the request has been made in <br />the past, the University has brought up the issue of their <br />providing emergency medical care to the indigent at no <br />charge to the City. <br /> <br /> Chief Taliaferro stated that many of the calls to the <br />University are due to malfunctioning fire alarm systems. <br /> <br /> Responding to a question from Mr. Towe concerning the <br />number of non-fire related emergency trips the Fire <br />Department makes, Mr. O'Connell stated that 740 had been <br />made in the last calendar year. <br /> <br /> On motion by Mr. Barnes, seconded by Dr. Hall, the <br />$282,839 appropriation for the purchase of fire trucks was <br />offered and carried over to the next meeting for <br />consideration° <br /> <br />RESOLUTION: RIVANNA PARK RECREATION AREA ACCESS FUNDS <br /> <br />~ On motion by Mrs. Gleason, seconded by Mr. Barnes, the <br />resolution authorizing the City and County to apply to the <br />State Department of Transportation for up to $200,000 in <br />funds to improve the road up to the entrance of Rivanna Park <br />was unanimously approved by Council. <br /> <br /> WHEREAS, the Rivanna Park is owned and is to be <br />developed by the County of Albemarle and the City of <br />Charlottesvile as a regional recreation facility serving the <br />residents of Albemarle County, the City of Charlottesville <br />and adjoining counties; and <br /> <br /> WHEREASj the facility is in need of adequate access; <br />and <br /> <br /> WHEREASj adequate access can be provided by the <br />improvement of the intersection of State Routes 20 and 1421; <br />the widening of Route 1421 from Route 20 to the park <br />entrance; and the construction of the park road from Route <br />1421 to the first entrance to the parking lot located <br />southeast of the ball diamonds; and <br /> <br /> WHEREAS, all right-of-way and utility costs necessary <br />for the access road construction will be provided by the <br />County and the City from the Rivanna Park project fund at no <br />cost to the State; and <br /> <br /> WHEREAS, the procedure governing the allocation of <br />recreational access funds set forth in Virginia Code Section <br />33.1-223, as amended, requires joint action by the Director <br />of Conservation and Historic Resources and the Highway and <br />Transportation Commission; and <br /> <br /> WHEREAS, a statement of policy agreed upon between the <br />said Director and Commission approves the use of such funds <br /> <br /> <br />
