<br /> Mr. Wilt Rieley, consuRant for theCity who proposed alternative designs for a
<br />two, three and four-lane Meadowcreek parkway, reviewed his proposals.

<br />The public hearing was opened.
<br />
<br /> Mr. Bill Smith, 388 Wildwood Court, expressed support for building the
<br />Meadowcreek Parkway, and asked others to stand who support the road. Approximately
<br />half of the audience stood in support. Mr. Smith said that a two lane road will not relieve
<br />the traffic problems, and noted that four lanes wilt not take much more land than two
<br />lanes.

<br /> Ms. Alexandria Searls, 1316 Chesapeake Street, said she has walked the path for
<br />the roadway and feels it is a resource for cmrselves and if the road is buiR it wilt damage
<br />the eco system. M~ Serals said a friendlier pedeStrian entry to the park and better place
<br />for the memorials are needed.

<br /> Mr. Tim Sanjules, I 111 Cherry Street~ said that streams are priceless andcannot
<br />be replaced. Mr, Sanjules said he does not think buitding amad is the answer to our
<br />problems and people should drive less.

<br /> Ms. Jane Dittmar, President of theCharlottesville Regional Chamber of
<br />Commerce, said that the Chamber represents 1,700 business, 40%. of which are in the
<br />City, and the Chamber fully endorses construction of the Meadowcreek Parkway. Ms.
<br />Dittmar said the roadis needed for the economic vitality of the center core of the city and
<br />to provide easy access for employees and customers~ Ms. Dittmar said the road is
<br />important as the City tries to locate high technOlogy businesses on West Main Street.

<br /> Mr. Roby Reiter, 1603 Cn'ady Avenue, a U. Va. student, said that the dominant
<br />question is what is the legacy we are leaving. Mr. Reiter opposed the Meadowcreek
<br />Parkway as it wilt destroy the park, Mr. Reiter said other forms of transportation need to
<br />be encouraged, the City should stop doing piecemeal planning .and traffic calming should
<br />be given to Park Street.
<br />
<br /> Ms. Amy Barbee said the Meadowcreek Parkway is a bad idea, wiI1 create
<br />pollution, will funnel traffic through- the heart of the City, wilt not help Park Street, and
<br />wilt encourage urban sprawl. Ms. Barbee said the City should encourage mass ~ransit
<br />such as light raiI.
<br />
<br /> Ms. Elizabeth Ochs, 1617 St. Armes's Road, speaking on behalf of high school
<br />students who oppose the Parkway, said that the road wilt cause environmentaI problems,
<br />and if we care more about roads than parks then people will leave the city.
<br />
<br /> Ms. Azurra Cox, 702 Ridge Street, said that no one wants to walk in the park next
<br />to the road, the park will become polIuted, and development will occur.
