AN ORDINANCEAMENDING AND RE-ENACTING SECTION 176 of the City Code: <br /> <br />BE IT ORDAINED, BY TNF COUNCIL OF CHARLOTTESVILLE, That Section 176 of the City Code <br /> <br />be and the same is hereby amended and re-enacted to read as follows; <br /> <br />SECTION 176. BICYCLES, AUTOMOBILES. AND OTHER VEHICLES. <br /> <br />No bicycle or similar machine shall be used over the sidewalks of the City, and <br /> <br />no automobile, bicycle or similar machine shall be used over the streets at a greater <br /> <br />rate of speed than fifteen miles an hour under any conditions, nor at any rate of <br /> <br />speed under this maximum which the conditions in the streets would make unsafe, <br /> <br />Every such vehicle shall be provided with a bell, gong or horn of a usual type <br /> <br />which shall be sounded at street crossings and whenever necessary to the safety of <br /> <br />any person using the streets, but at no other time; and no such vehicle shall be used <br /> <br />on the streets after nightfall without it scall be provided with at least two lighted <br /> <br />lamps showing white lights visible for a reasonable distance in the direction towards <br /> <br />which the vehicle is going and one red light attached to the rear of said vehicle <br /> <br />visible for a reasonable distance in the rear thereof. <br /> <br />Any violation of any provision of this section as far as it relates to automo- <br /> <br />miles shall be punishable by a fine of not less than $10 nor more than $100. and as <br /> <br />far as it relates to other machines by a fine of not less than one dollar nor more <br /> <br />than twenty-five dollars, or in any case by imprisonment in the City, jail for not <br /> <br />more than thirty days,or both by fine and imprisonment as herein provided. <br /> <br />Tris ordinance shall be in force from its passage. <br /> <br />Adopted by the Council July 10,1913. Mayor Signature. <br /> <br />AN ORDINANCE AMENDING AND RE-ENACTING SECTION 201 OF THE CITY CODE. <br /> <br />BE IT ORDAINED, BY THE COUNCIL OF CHARLOTTESVILLE, That section 201 of the City Code <br /> <br />entitled RIGHT OF WAY ON THE STREETS, be amended and re-enacted to read as follows; <br /> <br />SECTION 201. STREET TRAFFIC REGULATIONS. <br /> <br />All persons riding or driving upon the streets of this city shall at all times <br /> <br />keep as far to the right -hand side of the street as possible, and alwasy to the right <br /> <br />of the center, except when necessary to go somewhat to the left in order to pass a <br /> <br />vehicle or other obstructions which case he shall go no farther to the left than <br /> <br />necessary and return to the right as soon as possible. <br /> <br />The driver of every vehicle shall upon meeting any other vehicle in the street <br /> <br />keep to the right, and, when stopping, shall place his vehicle as near as possible <br /> <br />the curbstone; but in no instance shall he stop in the middle of the street or upon <br /> <br />the crossings. <br /> <br />No person shall stop any vehicle on the street backed up to the sidsrwalk so that <br /> <br />the vehicle shall extend its full length across the street, except as provided in <br /> <br />section 200. <br /> <br />In turning a corner of meeting or intersecting public highways the person operat- <br /> <br />ing, driving or propelling any vehicle shall not proceed, nor shall the owner of <br /> <br />such vehicle riding thereon or therein, cause or permit the same to proceed at a <br /> <br />rate of speed greeter than six miles per hour. And, in meeting or overtaking of <br /> <br />street passenger car -which has been stopped at a street corner for he purpose of <br /> <br />receiving or discharging a passenger or passengers, no such vehicle aforesaid shall <br /> <br />approach or pass within six feet of said street car so long as the same is so stopped <br /> <br />and remains standing for the purpose aforesaid. <br /> <br />A vehicle passing another vehicle moving in the opposite direction shall pass <br /> <br />to the rights but in passing another vehicle moving in the same direction shall pass <br /> <br />to the left. <br /> <br />A driver shall not back, turn abruptly, reduce the rata of speed or nor stop his <br /> <br />vehicle unless the way is clear and it is safe to person and property for him to do so <br /> <br />nor unless be first signifies by an appropriate signal his intention to do so. <br /> <br />No person operating, driving or propelling any automobile or other motor vehicle <br /> <br />shall cut out the muffler of his vehicle within the corporate limits, nor shall the <br /> <br />owner of any vehicle cause or permit the muffler to be cut out without said limits. <br /> <br />All vehicles, automobiles, and street care going in an easternly or westenly <br /> <br />direction shall have the right of way over all vericles, automobiles and street cars <br /> <br />going in a northernly or southernly direction. <br /> <br />Any person violating any section of this ordinance shall be guily of a mise- <br /> <br />meanor and upon conviction shall be fined not lees than one dollar nor more than <br /> <br />ten dollars for the first offense, and not less than one dollar nor more than <br /> <br />five dollars for any subsequent offense. <br /> <br />(Cointinued next page) <br />
