<br />An Ordinance amending and re-enacting Sec.282 of City Code, which was amended and
<br />
<br />re-enacted August 8, 1912.
<br />
<br />Be it Ordained, by the Common Council of Charlottesville, the Board of Aldermen
<br />
<br />Concurring, That Section 282 of the City Code, above referred to, be amended and
<br />
<br />re-enacted to read as follows:
<br />
<br />Sec. 282 VIOLATION OF SABBATH: HOW PUNISHED.
<br />
<br />If any person, on the Sabbath day, sells what is commonly known as soft drinks
<br />
<br />orother beverages, fruits, candies, or other confectionaries, or be found laboring
<br />
<br />at any trade or calling, or employ his apprentices or servante in labor or other
<br />
<br />business, except in household or other work of necessity or charity, he shall be
<br />
<br />deemed guilty of a misdemeanor and upon conviction thereof shall be fines not loss
<br />
<br />than $5. (five dollars) for each offense. Every day any person or servant or
<br />
<br />apprentice is so employed shall constitute a distinct offense and the Court in
<br />
<br />or. the Justice by whom any judgement of conviction is rendered may require of the
<br />
<br />person so convicted a recognizance in a penalty of not less than one hundred dollars
<br />
<br />( $100. ) nor more than five hundred dollars ($500.) , with or with out security, condi -
<br />
<br />tinned that suel, person shall be of good behavior, and .specially to refrain from a
<br />
<br />repetition of suer offense, for a period not exceeding twelve montes.
<br />
<br />This ordinance shall be in force from and after its passage.

<br />A Resolution authorizing he City Manager to arrange with the Industrial Commission
<br />
<br />of the State for the City to carry its own insurance risks in compliance with a
<br />
<br />provision of the Virginia Workmans' Compensation Act:
<br />
<br />Whereas the cast of the accidents of this city during the past twenty years have
<br />
<br />been small and Wlrer.eas the Virginia Workmans' Cpmriensation Act, under wrich we are
<br />
<br />forced to operate, ras many restrictions or, carnage suits possible under the old
<br />
<br />law and yet it may open up some avenues of claims but we are of the opinion that the
<br />
<br />City should carry its own insurance, therefore be. it
<br />
<br />Rcsolved, by the Common Council, the Board of Aldermen concurring,
<br />
<br />That the City Manager be and he is liereby enpowered to file the necessary
<br />
<br />papers with the Industrial Cormmission of Virginia before the 1st day of February,
<br />
<br />and pay the 4% premium on the estimated cost of insurance based on the pay roll,
<br />
<br />required by thus Act.
