F16or lights. <br />Except iii dwellings, all openings hereafter made in floors for the trans_ <br />mission of light to floors below, shall be covered with glass set in metal frames a"d bars, <br />The glass shall be not less than 3/4 inch in thickness, and if any glass measures more than <br />sixteen (16) square inches there shall be a rigid wire mesh either in the glass or under it, <br />ec. 21. Light, vent, and dumb -waiter shafts. <br />(a) In every building hereafter erected or altered, except frame buildings, <br />all walls or partiti6ns forming interior light or vent shafts shall be built in accordance <br />with the requirements for stair and elevator shafts in new buildings as specified in sec. <br />tion 17. The walls of dumb-waitershafts, except those in dwellings which extend only one <br />story above the basement or cellar, shall be of fire -resistive construction, and shall <br />be not less than 3 inches thick if constructed of brick, hollow or solid partition blocks, <br />or of steel studding and metal lath with 3/4 inch of Portland Cement plaster on each side; <br />or a 2 inc4 solid metal lath and Portland Cement plaster wall may be permitted, if securely <br />anchored at each floor. The material and method of construction to be as specified for stair <br />and elevator shafts in buildin je in Section 17. <br />(b) In frame buildings outside the fire limits the enclosure partitions <br />of all such shafts may be constructed as provided in Section 17 for stair and elevator shafts <br />in existing buildings. <br />(c) Where a dumb -waiter shaft does not extend through the roof the top of the <br />shaft shall be of fire -resistive con6truction of the same thickness as the walls of the <br />shaft. <br />(d) All openings in dumb -Baiter shafts shall be protected by fire doors <br />mounted in incombustible frames securely anchored to the walls. <br />(e) The walls of all light and vent shafts hereafter erected shall extend <br />not less than 3 feet above the roof level, except that when a shaft is covered by an in- <br />combustible ventilation skylight the walls need not extend more than 2 feet above the roof. <br />Masonry walls shall be properly coped. <br />When i$etal louvres are used for ventilation purposes, the louvres or elate <br />shall be riveted to the metal frame. <br />Sea. 22. R)of covering. <br />(a) All buildings except those specifically mentioned in Paragraph "b" of <br />this section shall have roof coverings of standard quality, such as. <br />Brick or concrete surface. <br />Clay or Portland Cement tile. <br />Tin or slate. <br />Asbestos shingles 1/8 inch thick or thicker. <br />Pitdh or felt, built-up type, four or five plies, gravel or slag surfaco• <br />Asbestos -Asphalt, built-up type, four or five plies, smooth or grit 8II1f6ae' <br />Vb1 All of the following classes of buildings may be covered with coverings <br />set forth above in Paragraph "a" of this section, or with standard Asphalt -Rag -Felt Prepared <br />roofing, or asphalt -rag g -felt shingles, or by other types of covering having equivalent fig' <br />ChicaB�� <br />resistive properties when approved and labeled by the Underwriters Laboratories, Ino', <br />I11. <br />DWELLINGS* <br />FRAME BUILDINGS. <br />JRuildings not exceeding two stories, or 30 feet in height and 2,500 <br />sQuare deet <br />in area, and not used for factories, ware houses, or mercantile purposes. <br />
