annexed are together largely a single, homogeneous, populated <br />urban and urbanizing community of which Charlottesville is the <br />vital source and center, and without which much of the urbanized <br />area in the County would not have developed and could not, with- <br />out the City, continue to exist and grow. <br />A large proportion of the people living in the areas sought <br />for annexation are entirely dependent for their livelihood upon <br />employment in the industries, business and commercial establish- <br />ments and professions conducted in the City and for marketing <br />products produced through enterprises and facilities conducted <br />in the City. <br />Charlottesville is the wholesale and retail shopping center <br />for the people in the area sought for annexation, and is the <br />principal source of supply for merchandise and articles sold and <br />distributed through establishments in the County. People living <br />in the County are dependent upon these wholesale and retail out- <br />lets for the necessities of life. <br />Postal facilities for the City and much of the area proposed <br />for annexation are centered in the City, as are telephone and <br />telegraph facilities and services. <br />Railroad and bus terminals serving the entire area are <br />centered in the City which is served by the Chesapeake and Ohio <br />Railroad, the Southern Railroad and Continental Trailways, Incor- <br />porated, all of which operate transportation services from <br />Charlottesville to other areas of Virginia and the United States. <br />There are numerous churches and religious institutions and <br />organizations in the area, the great majority of which are located <br />-5- <br />
