citizens to the territory sought for annexation where the citizens
are now served by private collectors under private contracts.
Fire Fighting: Charlottesville maintains coordinated and
integrated facilities for fighting fire and has a paid fire depart-
ment housed in two fire stations which are supported by a volunteer
firecompany. Each station has modern fire equipment and trained
personnel and is so located that the Charlottesville Fire Depart-
ment is able to respond quickly to alarms of fire and combat fire
efficiently and effectively at any location within the City. In
addition, the City maintains one engine company for employment
within Albemarle County, for which the County pays the wages of
seven members of the crew. When a fire in the County is beyond
the ability of this engine company, Charlottesville's equipment
customarily backs it up with additional personnel and equipment.
Albemarle County has volunteer fire departments located in places
removed from the built-up areas around the City, which are assisted
by the company maintained by the City for the County and sometimes
by the City Fire Department.
