Albemarle County does not <br />provide such services substantially in any of the areas of the <br />County. <br />Police Protection: The City of Charlottesville maintains <br />a coordinated and integrated police organization with personnel, <br />equipment and facilities necessary for the preservation of law <br />and order and the detection and prevention of crime in the urban <br />community and the protection and safety of its inhabitants and <br />property. The police force is adequate for the requirements of <br />the City. The County has no police force as such, but relies <br />on the State Police and an elected sheriff and deputies appointed <br />by him for law enforcement. <br />Public Safety, Health and Welfare Services: Charlottesville <br />maintains agencies to promote and protect the safety, health and <br />welfare of its inhabitants. Regulations and standards are pre- <br />scribed for the construction, alteration, repair and demolition <br />of buildings and structures, the installation, maintenance, altera- <br />tions and operation of boilers and unfired pressure vessels, fuel <br />burning equipment, electrical wiring, appliances and equipment, <br />elevators and escalators, and water and sewage disposal systems <br />in buildings and structures. Plans for such work must be submitted <br />and reviewed to insure compliance with the regulations and <br />standards. Permits are required before such work is commenced and <br />frequent periodic inspections by trained inspectors are made as <br />the work progresses.
